APPEAL FOR VOLUNTEERS AND SUPPORT
BACKGROUND
Delta Childrens Village (DCV) is
a non-profit, non-governmental
organization (NGO), founded by a Ghanaian philanthropist, Mr
Ken Obeng, who started a similar organization in a Freetown
slum in Sierra Leone in the early 1990s. The orphanage there
had to be closed down in 1992 as a result of the civil war that
broke out in that country. The idea was replicated in Ghana
in, April 1993, first as an orphanage in one of the deprived
communities, Weija, of Greater Accra region.
DCV
transformed into a non-profit school in this community in Accra.
The school consists of Pre-school, Primary, and Junior High Secondary
School. It caters for 45 orphans and up to 178 underprivileged
children of ages between 2 years and 17 years. The orphans are
non-residential, but are catered for during the day by DCV with
free meals and tuition, and by appointed guardians. The community,
being a low income one, is greatly assisted by DCV. Most children
therefore come to the community in order to benefit from the available,
albeit poor, facilities.
DCV
school was established to enrol children in the community who
by virtue of poverty are not able
to pay school fees and have little
or no access to good quality education opportunities. The school
population comprises children who have been neglected or abandoned
by their biological parents and would have had no opportunity
at all of being in school. Such children often end up becoming
wayward as they strive for survival in the unfriendly slums of
the city.
CURRICULUM
The school’s curriculum covers
English Language, Mathematics,
Science, Social Studies, Religious and Moral Education, Local Language
(Ga) and Culture including different types of Ghanaian music, drumming
and dancing).
SPECIAL
APPEAL
We
appeal for our school to be supported with volunteers to teach
• English Language,
• Science
• Mathematics
• Computer Appreciation
COLLABORATION
IN OTHER AREAS
Our
school wants to promote the holistic development of these deprived
children by offering them an education
in information and communication technology (ICT) via the use
of computers which forms part of the school curriculum so as to
enhance their potential for the future. This is an area that needs
urgent attention, particularly with the government‘s programme for introducing computer studies for mainstream
schools (public schools). Unfortunately our school has one computer donated
by the founder, and we don’t have Internet connection, except from outside
the school at Internet Cafe. Teaching and learning in this area is therefore
a nightmarish experience. We believe in equality of right to education for
all; unfortunately our children in our school will be taking the same final
examinations with other urban lucky children who have access to the world of
computers. Science is equally lacking as there is no laboratory nor simple
science equipment to enable pupils appreciate the subject. In line with this
desire of DCV school management and caretaker parents it would be appreciated
schools from abroad ( Europe, USA, Canada, Australia) come to the aid of DCV
with;
• Used computers (desktops or laptops) to implement this important project.
IT is crucial for the children but acquiring the tools for such technology
is far beyond the means of DCV and guardians of these children who are even
unable to pay any school fees for upkeep of the school.
• Support with donations of any kind (cash or materials) to support infrastructure
development of the school especially a science laboratory.
• Support setting up a school library.
